The Blue Moon Butterfly (Hypolimnas bolina), also known as the Cairns or Common Eggfly, is found across Australia, New Zealand, the Indian Ocean, the South Pacific, and South-East Asia. It takes its name from the ‘moon’ or ‘egg’-like white circles on the male’s wings. The Blue Moon Butterfly mimics poisonous species such as the Common Crow Butterfly, imitating their speckled wing markings to deter predators. Female Blue Moon Butterflies are attentive mothers, often inspecting leaves for ants before laying their eggs and guarding them from harm. Males can be territorial, engaging in aerial battles with other males to defend their chosen areas—a spectacle sometimes seen in Cairns gardens.
