  • The Golden Orb-weaver Spider (Trichonephila edulis) is a striking and sizeable arachnid, with females typically measuring 20–40 mm in body length, while much smaller males measure just 5–7 mm. It has a silvery-grey to cream-brown abdomen, a darker carapace with pale markings, and long legs banded in yellow and black.

These spiders construct large orb webs, sometimes exceeding a metre in diameter, using silk that gleams golden in sunlight. They inhabit diverse environments—from open forests, woodlands, and mangroves to gardens and coastal shrublands—across Australia. Their webs may feature protective “barrier” layers on one or both sides to help defend against bird strikes and can also include silk-wrapped prey stored like a pantry. Golden Orb-weavers remain in their webs both day and night, repairing or rebuilding them as needed.

Both sexes may coexist on the same web, with males often positioned at the edges awaiting mating opportunities. Although their bite can cause mild stinging, they are considered harmless to humans. Widespread and adaptable, this iconic spider is currently classified as Least Concern.
