  • The Olive-backed Sunbird (Cinnyris jugularis) is a delicate, vividly coloured, nectar-feeding bird, measuring just 10–12 cm in length and weighing around 8–12 g. Males are adorned with olive-green upperparts and a bright yellow underbelly, accented by a glossy bluish-black throat and breast patch. In contrast, females are more softly hued, with a consistent olive back and yellow underside.

Highly adaptable, this sunbird inhabits mangroves, rainforests, secondary woodlands, gardens, parks, and even urban areas—often venturing close to human residences. It feeds by probing flowers with its slender, curved bill, hovering or perching while sipping nectar, and also gleans small insects and spiders, particularly during the breeding season.

Their intricately woven, flask-shaped nests hang suspended from branches or structures, skilfully crafted from plant fibres and spider silk, with an overhanging porch guarding the entrance. Both parents cooperate in nesting and feeding their young. As a common and culturally beloved species, the Olive-backed Sunbird brings vibrant life to tropical and suburban landscapes.
