  • The Hercules Moth (Coscinocera hercules) is Australia’s largest moth, with a wingspan of up to 30 cm. It occupies the largest surface area of any living insect (around 300 square centimetres) and is often mistaken for the Atlas Moth of Asia due to its striking similarities in colour, appearance, and size. However, the Hercules Moth is endemic to the rainforests of northern Australia and Papua New Guinea.

The caterpillar of the Hercules Moth resembles the Caterpillar from Alice in Wonderland, with its large size, pale-blue colouring, yellow spines, and red dots running along its sides. These caterpillars can grow up to 12 cm in length and weigh up to 54 grams. Hercules Moths spend the majority of their life cycle as caterpillars—up to three months—building up food stores to sustain them for the remainder of their lives.

Female Hercules Moths emerge from the cocoon without a mouth, meaning they must rely entirely on the reserves built up during their caterpillar stage. Both male and female Hercules Moths have large wings with distinctive, transparent triangular ‘windows’ on each wing.
