The White Ibis (Threskiornis molucca) is a distinctive wading bird with a predominantly white body, bare black head, and long, down-curved black bill. Measuring between 69 and 76 cm in length, it was once primarily a bird of wetlands, lagoons, floodplains, and grasslands, but has adapted remarkably well to urban living. Today, it is frequently seen in parks, gardens, and even rubbish tips across eastern, northern, and south-western Australia, though it remains absent from Tasmania. Highly opportunistic, the White Ibis feeds on aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates—especially crayfish and mussels, which it digs out with its long bill and hammers open on hard surfaces. It also consumes human scraps, and its urban cheekiness has earned it affectionate nicknames such as “bin chicken” and “tip turkey”. Flocks often fly in V-shaped formations, moving between feeding and roosting sites. Breeding takes place in large colonies, often alongside other waterbirds. Males perform noisy courtship displays to attract a mate, after which pairs build shallow nest platforms of sticks or reeds in trees. They lay two to three dull white eggs, which hatch after about 21–23 days; chicks fledge in around seven weeks. The species is classified as Least Concern, although populations in some natural habitats are declining.
