The Spectacled Flying-fox (Pteropus conspicillatus) is a large, fruit-eating bat, notable for the pale straw-coloured fur encircling its eyes, which gives it a spectacled appearance. Adults measure about 22–25 cm in body length and weigh between 400 g and 1 kg. Their chest and shoulders may also bear pale yellow fur.
This species is found only in north-eastern Queensland—from around Tully north through Cape York and the Wet Tropics, including the Atherton Tablelands—and is also present in New Guinea and nearby islands. Spectacled Flying-foxes roost in tall rainforest trees, mangroves, and paperbark forests, emerging at dusk to forage widely. They feed on rainforest fruits, flowers, and nectar, particularly from eucalypts and figs, and play a vital role as pollinators and seed dispersers in these forest ecosystems.
Reproduction involves a single pup born annually between October and December, with young nursed and cared for over several months. Once considered Vulnerable, the species is now listed as Endangered following extreme heatwave-induced mass die-offs. Conservation efforts include monitoring roosts, improving habitat resilience, and mitigating threats such as tick infestations, habitat loss, and human disturbance.
