The common Green Tree Frog (Litoria caerulea) is one of Australia’s most familiar amphibians, reaching 7–10 cm in length, with females generally larger than males. Its smooth skin ranges from bright emerald green to olive-brown depending on temperature and environment, and its belly is creamy white. The species has large toe pads that allow it to climb vertical surfaces with ease, and a broad head with a blunt snout that gives it a distinctive appearance.
This adaptable frog is widespread across northern and eastern Australia, particularly abundant in Far North Queensland. It inhabits rainforests, woodlands, swamps and mangroves, but is equally at home in urban settings, often sheltering in water tanks, bathrooms, pipes and letterboxes. Mostly nocturnal, it emerges at night to feed on insects, spiders and other invertebrates. Its loud, throaty “crawk, crawk” call is commonly heard during warm, wet nights, especially after summer rains.
Breeding takes place in still or slow-moving water during the wet season. Females lay clumps of hundreds of eggs that hatch into tadpoles, which develop into froglets over several weeks. With a lifespan of more than 15 years in captivity and over 10 years in the wild, the Common Green Tree Frog is both hardy and long-lived, and is currently listed as Least Concern.
