The Barred Frog (genus Mixophyes) comprises Australia’s largest ground-dwelling frogs, found along the eastern coast. The Great Barred Frog (Mixophyes fasciolatus) reaches around 8–10 cm in body length. It has a brown or copper-coloured back with darker bands or patches forming a Y-shape near the head, a dark stripe running from the snout through the eye, yellow-blotched thighs, and strong, barred legs. Its belly is white, with fully webbed feet and unwebbed fingers.
These frogs inhabit rainforest and wet sclerophyll forest near streams. Nocturnal hunters, they shelter under moist leaf litter by day and emerge at night to feed on invertebrates. In spring and summer, females lay eggs by flicking them onto stream banks or rocks, where they adhere until rain washes them into the water. Their tadpoles are large, growing up to 8 cm, and take around 12 months to metamorphose.
