The Blue Pansy Butterfly (Junonia orithya) is a radiant jewel of Far North Queensland, gracing sunny open clearings and gardens during the warmer months. Found across eastern Australia and extending through South-East Asia and Africa, this nymphalid is admired for its vivid colours and prominent eyespots.
Males display velvety black forewings with white highlights and shimmering blue hindwings adorned with striking orange-ringed ocelli. The underside of the wings is patterned in wavy brown, providing excellent camouflage in dry-season environments.
The caterpillar is black with yellow speckles, an orange head, and branching hairs. It feeds on a variety of host plants, including Thunbergia, snapdragons (Antirrhinum), Angelonia, and other herbaceous vines. Pupation occurs in a spiny, well-camouflaged chrysalis fastened with silk, before the adult emerges. Sun-loving and territorial, Blue Pansy Butterflies often fiercely defend basking spots, making them a bold and enduring icon of FNQ’s butterfly fauna.
