  • The Blue-winged Kookaburra (Dacelo leachii) is a striking kingfisher native to northern Australia and southern New Guinea. Measuring around 38–42 cm in length and weighing between 260–330 g, it is slightly smaller than the more familiar Laughing Kookaburra. Adults have cream-coloured plumage with brownish streaks, bright blue wings, and a blue rump; males display bold blue tails, while females have rufous-brown tails with dark barring. These kookaburras inhabit open savannah woodlands, paperbark swamps, timbered waterways, cane fields, and farmlands. Often living in family groups of up to a dozen, they are cooperative breeders, with helper birds assisting the breeding pair in raising chicks. Their diet shifts seasonally—wet season feeding includes insects, frogs, and lizards, while in the dry season they hunt crayfish, scorpions, spiders, fish, small birds, and rodents. Nestlings hatch in tree hollows and are cared for by the whole group, learning to hunt over several weeks. Blue-winged Kookaburras typically live 10–15 years, and can occasionally reach 20 years in the wild.
