The Bracca Rotundata Moth (Bracca rotundata) is a geometrid species found in Far North Queensland, often attracted to light sheets in rainforest areas, and sometimes resting during the day—perhaps reflecting its unpalatable nature to birds and lizards. Adults have a wingspan of about 50 mm, with pristine white wings studded with yellow and black dots, a black thorax, and a yellow abdomen. The undersides contrast with bold black, grey, and white patches.
The caterpillar is strikingly black with numerous small white patches and several vivid orange spots. Growing to 5–6 cm in length, it feeds on rainforest vines such as Austrobaileya scandens, Steganthera laxiflora, and Wilkiea angustifolia. Pupation occurs in the typical geometrid fashion following the larval stage.
Impressive in appearance and uncommon in occurrence, this moth is a vivid and rare jewel of FNQ’s night skies.
