The Bush Stone-curlew (Burhinus grallarius) is a hauntingly beautiful, ground-dwelling bird, standing about 55 cm tall with long, delicate legs and a wingspan of nearly one metre. Its mottled grey-brown plumage, streaked with black, provides exceptional camouflage in open woodlands, grasslands, and sparse bush, where it often remains motionless—sometimes lying flat—to avoid detection. Mostly active at night, the Bush Stone-curlew emits an eerie wail, often likened to a human scream, that echoes through the outback. It hunts quietly, probing soil and leaf litter by moonlight for insects, spiders, frogs, small reptiles, and occasionally seeds. Breeding pairs lay two eggs directly on bare ground, usually in shaded spots. Incubation is shared by both parents. The species is monogamous and often remains within the same territory for life. While still common in northern Australia, populations have declined significantly in the south due to habitat loss and predation by foxes and cats.
