  • The Cairns Birdwing Butterfly (Ornithoptera euphorion) is the largest of all Australian butterflies, with a wingspan of up to 25 cm. These striking insects fly elegantly and gracefully through the rainforest. The male displays vivid iridescent green and black wings, while the larger female is less brightly coloured.

Cairns Birdwing Butterflies have a relatively short adult lifespan, living for only about five weeks. Their caterpillars feed on several species of native Aristolochia vine, which is toxic. The caterpillars are immune to these toxins, storing them in their red spines—a Darth Vader-like colouration that warns predators they are poisonous.

Recognisable and celebrated across Far North Queensland, the Cairns Birdwing Butterfly symbolises the beauty and fragility of the rainforest.
