  • The Double-headed Hawk Moth (Coequosa triangularis) is Australia’s largest hawk moth, with a wingspan of around 16 cm. Its caterpillar is striking—green or yellow with bold stripes and two false “head” knobs at its tail, which help to confuse predators.

Found from Far North Queensland down to Victoria, this species frequents coastal banksia woodlands, particularly in the summer months. The adult moth’s wings are patterned in yellow and brown waves, while the caterpillar feeds on native Proteaceae, including Banksia, Grevillea, and Macadamia.

After reaching about 10 cm in length, the larva burrows into soil to pupate in a brown pupa roughly 7 cm long. Emerging as a moth in summer, it brings a fleeting yet elegant nocturnal presence to FNQ and beyond.
