  • The Giant Ghost Moth (Aenetus spp.) is an extraordinary member of the primitive Hepialidae family, with males displaying vivid blue wings and females contrasting green—a striking example of sexual dichromatism reminiscent of the Eclectus Parrot. Found in Far North Queensland, particularly along rainforest edges where Alphitonia pioneer trees grow, this moth’s caterpillars burrow into trunks or soil, creating tunnels they seal with a silken plug before pupation.

When ready to emerge, the adult chews away the plug and climbs out of its tunnel to expand its wings—an astonishing transformation played out beneath the forest canopy. Though rarely seen, the Giant Ghost Moth enriches FNQ’s nocturnal palette with its elusive presence and bold colouring, bringing a spectral yet vibrant life to rainforest margins.
