The Giant White-tailed Rat (Uromys caudimaculatus) is one of Australia’s largest native rodents, weighing up to 1 kg with a body length of around 30 cm and a long, thick tail ending in white fur that aids balance. Its fur is grey-brown above and creamy white beneath.
This nocturnal omnivore inhabits the tropical rainforests of north-eastern Queensland and is also found in New Guinea and the Aru Islands. Equipped with strong jaws and continuously growing incisors, it can crack open hard-shelled fruits and nuts—and has even been known to damage steel rubbish bins in search of food. Its diet includes fruit, seeds, fungi, insects, small reptiles, amphibians, and bird eggs, and it plays a crucial role in dispersing seeds and fungal spores throughout the forest.
Breeding peaks during the wet season, with a gestation period of around 36 days. Litters usually consist of two to three young, which remain with their mother for about three months. Despite habitat pressures, the species remains widespread and is listed as Least Concern.
