  • The Golden Stag Beetle (Lamprima aurata) is a dazzling insect measuring about 15–25 mm in length. Males display metallic golden-green or yellow colouring and possess strong forward-facing mandibles used in combative displays, while smaller females show bluish-green or brown hues.

Found in Far North Queensland and across eastern and south-eastern Australia—including Tasmania and Victoria—this species inhabits dry sclerophyll forests where decaying Eucalyptus, Casuarina, and Allocasuarina logs are abundant. The larvae spend up to two years feeding on rotting wood before pupating in place and later emerging as adults.

Adult Golden Stag Beetles feed on tree sap, nectar, and flower exudates. Males often engage in vigorous battles, using their specialised slicing leg appendages to draw out sap and attract mates. These striking beetles emerge mainly during the warmer months, playing an important role in breaking down wood and cycling nutrients within their ecosystems.
