The Green-spotted Triangle Butterfly (Graphium macfarlanei) is a striking swallowtail with a wingspan of about 70 mm, found along Far North Queensland’s rainforest edges from the Gulf to the north-eastern coasts. Its range also extends across the Moluccas, New Guinea, the Admiralty Islands, and New Britain. Known for its vivid green to yellow triangular spots set against dark brown wings, it is among the most distinctive of Australia’s swallowtails.
The caterpillar feeds on both native and introduced plants, including Desmos species, Annona muricata (soursop), and Rollinia deliciosa, passing through several instars before pupating in a chrysalis. The pupa, typically green with brown markings, attaches to foliage via a girdle and cremaster.
Adults emerge to bask in sunshine and feed on nectar from forest blossoms, adding a delicate yet vivid presence to FNQ’s tropical canopy before continuing their range across the region.
