The Green Tree Python (Morelia viridis) is a visually striking arboreal snake, renowned for its vivid emerald-green adult colouring and remarkable juvenile transformation—hatchlings emerge in bright yellow or red before gradually turning green. It reaches around 1.5 m in length, with some individuals exceeding 2 m, and females tending to be slightly larger than males.
This python is native to the tropical rainforests of New Guinea, nearby Indonesian islands, and, uniquely within Australia, the Cape York Peninsula in Far North Queensland—particularly around the Iron Range and other wet forest zones. It favours the canopy and lower branches, where it coils like a saddle atop tree limbs, blending into the foliage by day while hunting. Its diet consists mostly of small mammals and reptiles.
Females lay clutches of 8–25 eggs and remain coiled around them until they hatch. Hatchlings undergo their colour change over several months as they mature. Despite being popular in the pet trade, wild populations face pressure from smuggling. The species is currently listed as Least Concern but is protected in Queensland due to its restricted Australian distribution.
