The Hibiscus Harlequin Bug (Tectocoris diophthalmus) is a jewel-like shield bug about 20 mm long, recognised for its brilliant metallic sheen and bold, variable colours. Adult females are typically mostly orange, while males display combinations of blue, red, or orange. The nymphs are equally striking, with shimmering green and purple hues.
This species inhabits eastern and northern Australia, as well as New Guinea and several nearby Pacific islands, and is commonly found in urban, agricultural, and coastal landscapes. Hibiscus Harlequin Bugs feed on plants in the hibiscus family, including ornamental hibiscus and cotton, piercing young shoots to sip the sugary sap.
Females lay clustered eggs around stems and guard them until they hatch—a rare example of maternal care in insects. Nymphs often gather in large groups, which appears to help deter predators. Despite their pest status in gardens, the species is widespread and not considered threatened.
