The Masked Lapwing (Vanellus miles), also known as the Masked Plover or Spur-winged Plover, is a medium-sized, ground-dwelling bird measuring between 33 and 38 cm in length. It has a distinctive appearance, with a brown back, black crown, black neck sides, white underparts, long red legs, and bold yellow facial wattles. A small yellow spur on each wing gives the species its “spur-winged” name.
These lapwings thrive across Australia and in nearby regions, including New Guinea and New Zealand. They favour open habitats such as grasslands, wetlands, parks, and even urban spaces like school grounds and car parks. Their diet mainly consists of insects, worms, spiders, and snails, which they search for on or just below the ground.
Masked Lapwings are fiercely defensive around their nests. During the breeding season, they may nest almost anywhere, including suburban lawns and rooftops. Both parents share nesting duties and will swoop low, call loudly, spread their wings, or feign injury to distract intruders. Chicks hatch precocially and can feed themselves almost immediately, though they may stay with their parents for several months.
The species is listed as Least Concern and is common, though its bold nesting habits frequently bring it into contact with people.
