The Variegated Monstera (Monstera deliciosa ‘Albo Borsigiana’) is a highly prized aroid houseplant, notable for its glossy, fenestrated foliage splashed with creamy-white variegation in blocky patches or streaks, each leaf displaying a unique pattern. More compact than the classic Monstera deliciosa, it is well-suited to indoor vertical displays or smaller interior spaces.
This tropical climber features a smooth geniculum where the leaf attaches to the stem (unlike the wrinkled junction seen in M. deliciosa) and develops striking aerial roots that latch onto supports such as moss poles. Variegated forms are relatively more available than some other rare Monsteras due to their ability to propagate readily from cuttings. However, their striking variegation—caused by a genetic mutation resulting in chlorophyll-deficient sections—makes them valuable and often costly collector’s specimens.
Like all Monsteras, it thrives in bright, indirect light, well-draining soil, and warm, humid conditions. Variegated leaves are less efficient at photosynthesis, so they benefit from slightly higher light levels and more attentive care.
