  • The Southern Cassowary (Casuarius casuarius) is a colossal, flightless rainforest bird and one of Australia’s most iconic, prehistoric-looking creatures. Standing up to around 1.7 m tall, it has coarse, hair-like black plumage, a distinctive helmet-like casque atop its head, a bright blue neck and face, and two striking red wattles hanging from its throat.

Largely solitary, it inhabits the dense tropical rainforests of north-eastern Australia, New Guinea, and parts of Indonesia. The cassowary forages on the forest floor, feeding primarily on fruit, seeds, and fungi, but also consuming insects, small vertebrates, and carrion when available. Its powerful legs are armed with a deadly inner claw up to 12 cm long, capable of delivering formidable kicks.

During the breeding season, the male takes charge—building a ground nest, incubating three to four pea-green eggs, and rearing the chicks entirely alone. Despite its daunting appearance, the cassowary remains shy and elusive, playing a vital role as a seed disperser in its ecosystem.

The species is considered Endangered in Australia due to habitat loss and road mortality, though populations remain stable in parts of its range.

    • Wipe gently with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth to remove dust or fingerprints.

    • Avoid harsh cleaners or abrasive surfaces to prevent scratching the gloss finish.

    • Keep dry — do not submerge in water or place in the dishwasher.

    • Store away from extreme heat or prolonged sunlight to preserve print vibrancy and magnet strength.

    • Handle with care to prevent dents or chips in the aluminium casing.
