  • The Philodendron melanochrysum (Philodendron melanochrysum) is a rare and highly sought-after aroid native to the misty Andean foothills of Colombia. Its leaves emerge with a copper-gold, velvety sheen before maturing into a deep, almost black-green tone that shimmers with tiny golden glints in sunlight—hence the name “black gold.”

A climbing species, it thrives when provided with a moss pole or similar support, which encourages the development of its oversized, velvety, heart-shaped leaves—often reaching up to 60 cm indoors—with striking pale-green venation. It flourishes in bright, indirect light, warm temperatures (18–27 °C), consistently high humidity (60–80%), and enriched, well-draining soil incorporating peat, perlite, orchid bark, or charcoal. Watering should be timed for when the top layer of soil has dried to prevent root rot.

Moderately fast-growing under ideal conditions, this striking climber brings dramatic tropical flair to any collection—though it is toxic if ingested and can be vulnerable to pests such as spider mites if humidity dips or leaves remain dusty.
