The Philodendron verrucosum (Philodendron verrucosum) is a captivating climbing aroid from Central and South America, native to countries including Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. It is admired for its velvety, deep green, heart-shaped leaves that shimmer with lighter silver-green veins and often display beautiful burgundy undersides. These are held aloft on fuzzy, bristly petioles—reflected in its specific epithet verrucosum, meaning “warty.”
In its natural habitat, it typically grows as a hemiepiphyte, climbing tree trunks toward filtered sunlight. As a houseplant, it can reach heights of around 90 cm when supported by a moss pole. Highly sought after yet moderately demanding, it thrives in bright, indirect light, warm temperatures, consistently high humidity, and a well-draining, chunky substrate.
Although it requires attentive care, its velvety foliage and dramatic venation make it a prized collector’s plant, bringing a lush, luxurious presence to any indoor space.
