  • The Polka Dot Begonia (Begonia maculata) is a show-stopping cane-type houseplant, celebrated for its dark olive-green, angel-wing-shaped leaves adorned with bright silvery-white spots and undersides that glow with rich burgundy to red-purple tones. Native to the Atlantic rainforests of south-eastern Brazil, particularly in Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro, it brings a touch of tropical elegance to indoor spaces.

Reaching heights of up to around 60 cm indoors (and potentially taller in ideal conditions), it grows upright on cane-like stems. Care involves providing bright, indirect light, well-draining yet moisture-retentive soil, and moderate watering that allows the top layer to dry between waterings. Consistently high humidity—at least 45%—helps keep the foliage in pristine condition.

With proper care, the Polka Dot Begonia can bloom from spring through summer, producing clusters of delicate white (occasionally pink) flowers with bright yellow centres. Though not rare, its dramatic spotted foliage makes it a memorable centrepiece—though caution is advised, as it is toxic if ingested by pets or children.
