  • The Red-tailed Black Cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus banksii) is one of Australia’s most striking parrots, measuring around 60 cm in length and weighing between 615–920 g, depending on gender. Males are glossy black, distinguished by vivid red tail panels that give the species its common name, while females feature subtly barred underparts and yellow spotting on the head and wings. These cockatoos inhabit a wide range of habitats, from eucalyptus woodlands and riparian floodplains to grasslands, farmlands, and fire-affected shrublands. They often gather in flocks, moving seasonally to follow food availability. Their strong, curved beaks are perfectly adapted for cracking seeds, which form the bulk of their diet, along with fruits, berries, flowers, nectar, and occasionally insects or larvae. As cavity nesters, they rely on large hollows in mature eucalypts for breeding and shelter. With a lifespan of 25–50 years in the wild, the Red-tailed Black Cockatoo is a highly intelligent, social species and an enduring symbol of Australia’s native birdlife.
