  • The Rhaphidophora cryptantha (Rhaphidophora cryptantha) is a rare and captivating tropical shingling climber, known for its overlapping, velvet-textured, heart-shaped leaves adorned with intricate silver venation that press flush against surfaces as they ascend—earning it the nickname “shingle plant.” Native to Papua New Guinea and tropical South-East Asia, this hemiepiphyte also occurs in cultivation across Australia and New Zealand, thriving indoors where humidity and warmth prevail.

Each mature leaf typically reaches around 3 cm in length, with climbing stimulating compact growth and enhanced patterning. Without vertical support—ideally a tall moss pole or smooth wooden plank—the plant remains juvenile and may grow leggy.

Care requirements include bright, indirect light, consistent moisture without waterlogging, and elevated humidity (ideally above 50–60%), with temperatures maintained between 18–27 °C for optimal growth. Its mesmerising foliage and unusual climbing habit make it a standout choice for indoor plant enthusiasts seeking a textured and elegant addition to their collection.
