  • The Sulphur-crested Cockatoo (Cacatua galerita) is one of Australia’s most recognisable birds, easily identified by its bright white plumage and striking yellow crest. Growing up to 50 cm in length, with a wingspan of around one metre, this large parrot is known for its loud, raucous calls and charismatic personality. Found across much of mainland Australia, New Guinea, and nearby islands, the Sulphur-crested Cockatoo thrives in a variety of habitats, from open woodlands and rainforests to urban parks and backyards. Highly intelligent and social, these birds often gather in large, noisy flocks and have been observed using problem-solving skills to access food—sometimes even learning to open bins. Their diet includes seeds, nuts, fruits, berries, roots, and occasional insects, with groups often foraging together while a sentinel bird keeps watch. In the wild, they can live for several decades, while in captivity they have been known to reach more than 70 years of age. The Sulphur-crested Cockatoo’s combination of beauty, intelligence, and playfulness has made it an enduring icon of Australia’s birdlife.
