  • The Superb Fairy-wren (Malurus cyaneus) is a charismatic, diminutive bird found across south-eastern Australia. At just 14–20 cm long, these energetic songbirds are a delight to observe—particularly the breeding male, with his vivid blue head, cheeks, throat, and tail contrasted by a sleek black mask. Females and non-breeding males are mostly grey-brown in colour.

Highly adaptable, Superb Fairy-wrens inhabit dense understorey in open eucalypt woodland, heath, coastal bush, and even urban gardens and parks. They typically form small social groups—comprised of a dominant male, several females, offspring, and helpers from previous broods—who cooperate in nest building, feeding nestlings, and raising multiple broods per season. The female constructs a dome-shaped nest from grasses, twigs, moss, and spider webbing, often hidden low in shrubs.

Known for their fascinating social behaviour, these wrens are socially monogamous yet sexually promiscuous, with courtship displays that include males plucking and presenting yellow or other brightly coloured petals to females. They feed mainly on insects and other small arthropods, foraging close to the ground or within low vegetation.

With their striking appearance, complex social lives, and ubiquity in backyards, the Superb Fairy-wren remains one of Australia’s most beloved native birds.

    • Store away from extreme heat or prolonged sunlight to preserve print vibrancy and magnet strength.

    • Handle with care to prevent dents or chips in the aluminium casing.
