The Willie Wagtail (Rhipidura leucophrys) is a lively black-and-white songbird, measuring around 19–21 cm in length and weighing just 17–24 g. Its long, fanned tail—constantly wagging from side to side—gives the bird its name and is a signature display of its restless energy.
Common and widespread across mainland Australia (excluding Tasmania), as well as New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, and parts of Indonesia, the Willie Wagtail thrives in open woodlands, urban gardens, parks, and farmlands. It often accompanies livestock, darting behind cattle or sheep to catch insects disturbed by their movement, or even perching on their backs as a mobile hunting platform.
These bold little birds are fiercely territorial, attacking much larger species—even kookaburras and wedge-tailed eagles—to defend their patch. Their call rings out both day and night, especially during the breeding season. Willie Wagtails form monogamous pairs and build neat, cup-shaped nests from grass, bark strips, and spider webbing, often lining them with fur or hair. They lay two to four eggs and may raise up to four broods in a season.
With their adaptable habits and fearless demeanour, these charming birds remain one of Australia’s most familiar backyard presences.
