  • The Platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) is one of Australia’s most extraordinary creatures, combining a duck-like bill, beaver-like tail, and webbed feet. Measuring around 38–60 cm in length and weighing up to 3 kg, males are often larger than females. A semi-aquatic monotreme that lays eggs, the platypus is found across eastern Australia and Tasmania, relying on clean rivers, streams, and billabongs.

It is equipped with dense, waterproof fur for insulation, a broad, flat tail used for steering and fat storage, and highly sensitive electroreceptors in the bill that detect prey. Platypuses hunt underwater with their eyes, ears, and nostrils closed, feeding on insect larvae, worms, yabbies, and small crustaceans.

Breeding is unique: females lay eggs in burrows dug into riverbanks and feed their young with milk secreted through openings in the skin. Males have venomous spurs on their hind feet, which they use defensively, particularly during the mating season.

Platypus populations are declining due to habitat loss, water pollution, dams, and predation, and the species is considered Near Threatened. Despite this, it remains an enduring emblem of Australia’s wild heritage.
